The Cockade was used by the Confederate soldier and civilian to show their allegiance to the Southern cause. Also known as an Secession Cockade they were worn on hats and jackets.
Generally made of ribbon, but as you can see in the upper right hand corner, the South Carolina Cockade was made of Palmetto leaves with a South Carolina button to show state affiliation.
The North Carolina Cockade above is from my collection and is what I believe to be a mourning cockade to show sympathy for a fallen friend or family member.

Important from Washington;

  "The Government is determined to put a stop to the Secession cockades
and other emblems which have been so unblushingly exhibited in Baltimore
for months past and those found wearing them in the future will be arrested
as traitors against the Government."
