The picture below is believed to be the home of Captain James E. Riddick of, Riddick's  Co. 59th Virginia Militia. There are 22 Confederate soldiers and two elderly people, a man and women. The man is standing on the porch behind the bush and the woman is seated on the left end of the porch. Captain Riddick is one of the two Officers standing with their arms folded to the left of the building. Also, below are the Captain's discharge paper and his oath and of allegiance to the United States.

The 59th Militia was from Cypress Chapel Township of Nansemond County, Virginia.

On February 19, 1862 three companies of the 59th Militia enlisted into the regiment, for six months, by an order issue Feb. 18, 1862, by Brigadier General A. G. Blanchard, commanding the 3rd Brigade, Dept. of Norfolk and one of these companies was Captain Riddick’s, Co. B. In May of 1862 the regiment was disbanded by the operation of the conscription act, and those men subject to conscription were removed from the lines and assigned to other regiments. Muster rolls of June 30th, 1862 of company I, 14th Reg. Virginia Infantry, state that some members of the 59th Militia, were by order of Brig. Gen. Lewis A. Armistead, dated May 6th, 1862, were assigned to them. Captain Riddick also was transferred on May 5,1862 to Co. A, 14th Virginia Infantry with the rank of Private, but shortly after on or about
June 1,1862 was hospitalized in Richmond, VA with pneumonia. He unfortunately died of the disease on July 10, 1862 at Danville, VA. Some ware along the line there was a mix up, if he did die who signed his Oath of Allegiance? There are several James and James E. Riddick's four out of seven of them are from the 59th Virginia Militia.

I am looking for any other information on Captain James Edward Riddick, of Nansemond County, Virginia that might be out there. If you have any information please Email it to me. I will put it into the site and you will get full credit for it.
